About the Sapta Puri Yatra
The Sapta Puri are seven cities named in a well-known Sanskrit verse as givers of liberation: Ayodhya, Mathura, Maya (Haridwar), Kashi (Varanasi), Kanchi (Kanchipuram), Avantika (Ujjain) and Dvaravati (Dwarka). Each is a whole sacred landscape of temples, ghats and tirthas, not a single shrine.
Pilgrims usually visit them over several journeys — the northern cities together, then Ujjain, Dwarka and Kanchipuram separately.
The usual route
- Ayodhya — Shri Ram Janmabhoomi, Hanuman Garhi
- Mathura and Vrindavan
- Haridwar — Har Ki Pauri and the Ganga Aarti
- Kashi (Varanasi) — Kashi Vishwanath and the ghats
- Ujjain — Mahakaleshwar
- Dwarka — Dwarkadhish
- Kanchipuram — Ekambareswarar, Kamakshi, Varadharaja Perumal
Routes vary by operator and starting city. Opening dates, timings and rules change — confirm with the temple or the official portal before you travel.
