About the Great Temples of Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu has some of the largest and oldest living temples in India: the Meenakshi temple at Madurai, the Ramanathaswamy temple at Rameswaram with its long corridors, Kanyakumari at the southern tip of India, the Chola Brihadeeswarar temple at Thanjavur (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and the vast Ranganathaswamy temple at Srirangam.
A week to ten days by road covers the main temples comfortably; Chennai, Madurai and Tiruchirappalli are the usual bases.
The usual route
- Madurai — Meenakshi Amman
- Rameswaram — Ramanathaswamy and the theerthams
- Kanyakumari — Bhagavathy Amman and the sunrise at the tip of India
- Thanjavur — Brihadeeswarar
- Srirangam and Thiruvanaikaval (Tiruchirappalli)
Routes vary by operator and starting city. Opening dates, timings and rules change — confirm with the temple or the official portal before you travel.

When to go
October–March is the best weather. Chithirai festival in Madurai (April–May) and Vaikunta Ekadashi at Srirangam (December–January) are major festivals.
Practical tips
- Traditional dress is expected; some temples ask men to remove shirts in the sanctum.
- Big temple towns get very busy on festival and weekend days — early mornings are calmer.
- Rameswaram's 22 theertham baths are a custom before darshan.
